ONTARIO'S BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AREAS HONOUR EIGHT AT 2009 AWARDS CEREMONY

(Toronto, Ont) — The Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) and the Toronto Association of BIAs (TABIA) are pleased to announce the eight winners of their 2009 Business Improvement Area Awards.

Recognizing the best that Business Improvement Area revitalization and management has to offer, OBIAA and TABIA honoured the winners at its annual conference in Toronto, Ontario. Categories covered all aspects of business improvement areas, including management, development, marketing and communication and green awards.

“The BIA Achievement Awards celebrate and communicate the most successful and innovative efforts in Ontario BIA development,” said OBIAA President, Susan Nicholson.

“The Awards Committee was extremely impressed with the quality of the submissions this year,” added OBIAA Awards Committee Chair, Rob Hunter.

Categories were judged on innovation, replication, representation and outcome and were awarded to the following organizations in their respective categories (view summary PDF)

  • Marketing & Communications: ‘Everything’s Here for You’ project, Downtown Oshawa BIA
  • Organizational Communications: ‘It’s the Real Deal’ Newsletter/Website, Downtown Kingston BIA
  • Social Initiatives: ‘Streets to Homes Project’, Downtown Yonge BIA
  • Special Events and Promotions: ‘Muskoka Chair Festival’, Uptown Gravenhurst BIA
  • Market Analysis & Business Development: Market Assessment, Downtown Kincardine BIA
  • Building Rehabilitation & Conservation: ‘Joe Janoscik’, Kerr Village BIA
  • Bricks and Mortar Project Award: ‘Town Square Redevelopment’, Uptown Waterloo BIA
  • Green Award: Tree Watering Project, St. Lawrence Market BIA

“The eight winning projects truly exemplify the high standards of quality and professionalism deserving of recognition by OBIAA and TABIA,” said John Kiru, TABIA Executive Director and OBIAA Vice-President.

Nicholson and Kiru presented the awards jointly with Hunter and Awards Committee co-chair Deborah Etsten of the Beach BIA in Toronto, at an award luncheon on Tuesday, March 31st, the finale of the 3-day conference.
